Itinerary for: Hitler's Capitals - the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (9GHCV/1)

Germany Munich
Berchtesgaden Battlefields

Our 9-day tour follows the story through Munich and Nuremberg, whilst
the 12-day tour also visits Berlin.

9-Day Break - Munich & Nuremberg

  • Day 1 – Local departure then onwards to Belgium
    for an overnight stay.

  • Day 2 – South through Germany to Bad Aibling in
    Bavaria, Munich for a three-night stay. B

  • Day 3 – Munich (included). Hitler considered
Munich as the ‘Capital of the Movement’ and it was the birthplace of
National Socialism. It was here that the dictator made his attempt to
seize power in the so-called Beer Hall, or Munich Putsch, in 1923. We
spend the day touring the areas of Nazi influence, including the route
of the Putsch to the Feldernhalle, and the sites of the former Nazi
Headquarters, the ‘Brown House’ and the Königsplatz parade ground. B

  • Day 4 – Berchtesgaden (included). Today we
travel to Hitler’s very own capital, his home at Berchtesgaden. We make
our way up the hill to the Nazi enclave, the National Redoubt. We also
pay a visit to the ‘Eagle’s Nest’, commissioned by Martin Bormann on
behalf of the Nazi Party as a present for Hitler’s 50th birthday. We
see, too, the site of Hitler’s former home, the Berghof, where he spent
most of his time during the Second World War. B

  • Day 5 – Munich (included); Dachau (included).
Today gives us some free time in the beautiful city of Munich, very much
rebuilt in its original style after the ravages of the war. In the
afternoon we visit Dachau, the first true Concentration Camp – a moving
reminder of the brutality of National Socialism and all that it
entailed. From Dachau we travel on to Nuremberg or Bayreuth for a
    two-night stay. B

  • Day 6 - Nuremberg (included). We spend the day
in and around the city Hitler considered to be the ‘Capital of the
Party’. Here we see examples of Nazi architecture, the former parade
grounds and stadiums. It was here, in Nuremberg, that the party was to
grow, and to die. The city was chosen as the site for the famous
‘Nuremberg Trials’. We see the famous court house where many Nazis
including Goering and Hess were tried. B

  • Day 7 – The Rhine (included); Rhine Cruise
(optional). We leave Nuremberg and travel north to the River Rhine. Join
an optional cruise on the majestic river with lunch included. Overnight
    in the Rhine area. B

  • Day 8 – The Ardennes Offensive (included). We
travel through the Ardennes Forest, the area used by Hitler during the
winter of 1944/1945 in his last attempt to divide and defeat the Allies
as they advanced towards Germany. The operation, known as the ‘Battle of
the Bulge’, was to cause major problems to the Allies. Overnight stay
    in Belgium. B

  • Day 9 – To Calais, then return home. B

Included Meals:
B=Breakfast

12-Day Break - Berlin, Munich & Nuremberg

  • Day 1 – Local departure by coach then onwards
to Belgium for an overnight stay.

  • Day 2 – Travel across Germany to Berlin for
    three nights. B

  • Day 3 – Berlin (included). We spend today in
and around Berlin where we visit the Wannsee Conference Centre (entrance
is approximately €2 per person and is dependant on modern day
conferences not taking place) where the infamous meeting took place that
determined the ‘Final Solution’ and fate of European Jews. B

  • Day 4 – Nazi Berlin (included). We look at the
story of Hitler’s rise and fall, visiting the Reichstag Building, the
Olympic Stadium and Bell Tower, Brandenburg Gate and the former
Chancellery area, standing above Hitler’s bunker. We then discover the
Topography of Terror (notorious SS/Gestapo areas) and the Karshorst
Museum – the former Soviet HQ and location of the Third Reich surrender.
